The President of the Republic of Mauritius, Amina Gharib-Fakim, resigned today (Saturday) after her involvement in a financial scandal, according to what her lawyer announced, days after announcing her refusal to step down from her post, after her involvement in using a bank card to buy jewelry and luxury goods worth 115 thousand riyals ( 25 thousand euros).
And according to "AFP", Gharib Fakim, the only woman who assumed this position in Mauritius, submitted her resignation for the "public interest", according to what was announced by her lawyer, Youssef Mohamed, explaining that the resignation will take effect on the current March.
Gharib-Fakim has vowed to fight the accusations against her of using a bank card provided by a non-governmental organization for personal purchases including jewelry and luxury goods worth at least 25,000 euros, according to local newspaper Express.
And Prime Minister Pravind Jagnoth announced earlier this month that Gharib Fakim had agreed to resign, and that she would leave her post in the period between the celebrations of the 50th anniversary of the independence of the archipelago, but a presidential statement issued last Wednesday strongly criticized the campaign of "attacks and false allegations for weeks." He confirmed that Gharib Fakim intends to clear her responsibility and that she will not resign.
The presidency said that in May 2016 Gurib-Fakim received a credit card to pay for travel and logistical purchases associated with her position at the institute, but used it casually for unrelated expenses.
Gharib Fakim said that she informed the "Planet Earth Institute" immediately and that she returned the money that was spent, and also paid all the sums of money that the institute spent on the tasks entrusted to it.
