Professor and Consultant of Endocrinology and Diabetes, Professor Abdul Moeen Eid Al-Agha, confirmed that the keenness of Muslim players in the European League to fast the month and play while they are fasting is a beautiful thing that confirms their keenness to respect the obligatory and ritual fasting, because the performance of matches is not one of the pathological conditions that necessitate breaking the fast.
He told Okaz that from a health point of view, there are five adverse results that may occur when playing football for 90 minutes in the case of fasting, indicating that it was observed in most international matches that some Muslim players participate in the match while they are fasting, which is reflected in the health of the body. It may, God forbid, lead to some negative and dangerous repercussions.
He added: The most important of these repercussions on the health of the body are:
¶ Feeling extremely tired and exhausted. A healthy, healthy and athletic individual who does not complain of any diseases can practice any sporting activity while he is in a state of fasting for a quarter of an hour, provided that the sport is not violent or requires double effort like football.
¶ Exposure to an imbalance and a drop in blood sugar, and this may cause him to feel dizzy, very tired, sweating and dizzy, which may lead to a feeling of unconsciousness.
¶ Feeling very thirsty, and this feeling may increase with the high temperature of the outside atmosphere.
¶ Loss of concentration, because the body is in a state of continuous hours of fasting, and therefore there are no food sources for energy and activity.
¶ When breaking the fast at the time of the match, the player may drink a lot of water as a result of thirst and the desire to replace the body with water, and this may affect him in continuing the match due to the discomfort and fullness of the bladder.
Al-Agha continued: The scientific reports conducted on the effect of fasting on the performance of the players are few and their results are inconclusive, but it is known that the lifestyle of the players changes during the month of Ramadan, as the number of hours of sleep decreases and the player stays up during the night contrary to the usual and usual days, and then the number of hours decreases. Their sleep, which may harm his athletic and analytical abilities on the field, and also fasting may affect the muscles of the players and cause them to fatigue, and thus the speed of the players on the field decreases.
Professor Al-Agha concluded by saying: “The best exercise in the state of fasting is walking for 20-30 minutes, provided that it is in cold weather and in periods that are not sunny. A person drinks water and makes up for what the body loses through sweating when feeling thirsty.
The five reasons:
Loss of focus
Low blood sugar
extreme thirst
Poor player activity
Feeling tired and exhausted
