In review of news reports, Helfrich was a German author and independent activist of the commons who blogs. She co-founded the Commons-Institut in Germany and also in 2010, she co-founded the Commons Strategies Group with Michel Bauwens of the Foundation for Peer to Peer Alternatives and David Bollier.
According to Patterns Of Commoning, Helfrich edited and co-authored numerous books including; Who Owns the World? The Rediscovery of the Commons (2009, in Spanish, Genes, Bytes y Emisiones. Bienes Comunes y Ciudadania); edited Elinor Ostrom: Was mehr wird, wenn wir teilen (Munich 2011); and, with the Heinrich-Böll-Foundation, Commons.
Andrea Couvert wrote in tribute; “With incredible sadness I share the news that Silke Helfrich has passed away. She had a fatal accident during a short mountain hike in Liechtenstein. I met her in 2020 during the presentation in South Africa of the book she wrote with David Bollier “Free, fair and alive: the insurgent power of the commons” organized by Heinrich Böll Foundation. Through these events the activity of the Cape Town Commoners project has also begun. Many activists met her during that time, particularly during an intense and beautiful event at Cissie Gool House. For me Silke was a person who questioned things, that she was always looking for other points of view … We will miss her enormously.”
