Michael Soule’s work, particularly his early papers, defining Conservation Biology have always possessed a timeless relevance for me providing a welcome reminder that conservation is a “missional and crisis” field. He was truly the “father of Conservation Biology”

We mourn with you the loss of a legend, the “father of conservation biology”, SCB cofounder Michael Soulé, 84. Conservation biology is taught globally bc of him. We express our gratitude. In ’85 he defined a “new synthetic discipline” to save species

Sad hear the Michael Soulé has passed away. Oft described as the “Father of Conservation Biology” but perhaps also as the “Godfather of #rewilding” …understood the true meaning of the rewilding vision.

“Is the sacrifice of so much natural productivity, beauty, and diversity prudent, even if some human communities and companies might be enriched? No. The worth of nature is beyond question and our obligation to minimize its gratuitous degradation is no less.”-Michael #Soule, 2013

In recalling Michael Soulé’s greatness of spirit, mind, + heart, one conversation we has stayed with me. He said, “It’s not just the end of a species I grieve, I also grieve the birth of new species.” Extinction + Evolution are siblings. His wicked humor and his tears I will miss

RIP Michael Soulé, father of conservation biology. A paper that stands out for me is his essay (based on a 1989 speech) on the global onslaught of alien species: “the most revolutionary of environmental challenges”. His views were remarkably prophetic as well as controversial.
