A CHAMPION DIES
Panamanian boxist authorities confirmed, the passing of former world champion
Ernesto ′′ Ñato ′′ Marcel, who suffered from health breaks, mainly Alzheimer’s.Born in the city of Columbus, on May 23, 1948 and debuted as a professional in April 1966, defeating Valentin Worrell by knockout in the first round. In his third year as a professional he won the national crown of the roosters, defeating none other than Eugenio Hurtado.
And the following year, in 1970, he crowned himself king of the feathers defeating his archirival, Miguel Riasco, who had taken away the undefeated in 1967.
In 1971 he had his longed for starting chance. Traveled to Matsuyama, Japan to challenge champion Kuniaki Shibata. ′′ El Ñato ′′ Marcel showed his boxing virtues throughout the fifteen rounds, lacerated the champion’s face and stormed a masterpiece.
But the judges didn’t recognize his triumph and protected the champion with a draw.
It was then that on August 19, 1972, at the Maestranza ′′ César Girón ′′ in Maracay, Venezuela, Ernesto Marcel had his second chance. Now before a man just as dangerous as Shibata, whom they called ′′ The Lion of Cumana “, Antonio Gomez. Marcel gave a boxing chair and crowned herself World featherweight champion.

He made four successful defenses of his crown of feathers, defeating Antonio Gomez in rematch, Mexican Enrique Garcia, Japanese Spider Nemoto and Nicaraguan Alexis Arguello, the same one who would later win crowns in three different categories for Latin America’s glory.
In fullness of physical forms, in the pinnacle of his career and at just 26 years old, Ernesto Marcel made the decision to retire from boxing in 1974. He never lost his crown, as he never received the count of ten seconds in the canvas.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
