Just learnt of the passing of George Hallet who had been ill for a while now. I was introduced to Mr Hallet when I returned to Bush Radio after my stint at Parliament. He had been a childhood friend of Zane and was asked to document some of the work the station did. Mr Hallet also decided that our reception area would have a permanent exhibition some of his photographs as he was tired as to how “struggle ngo” it looked. Thank you Mr Hallet, for all the tips, the wonderful photographs and the stories.

Very sad new from South Africa. George Hallet deserved much wider recognition than he ever received. There was such beauty, grace, & humanity in his photography. Go well, my friend.

RIP George Hallet! A master photographer, who used his camera to capture the impact of Apartheid on the lives of people of colour in the Cape! I met George in Paris in 2013, at the opening of an exhibition called: A Portrait of South Africa. RIP George! #artist

Cape Town documentary photography legend George Hallet passed away yesterday at age 78. Hallet rose to prominence for his poignant images of SA exiles and his enormous body of work which captured South Africa’s turbulent history through Apartheid and into the young democracy.

Two George Hallet photos. He was from Haut Bay, a Cape Town suburb, & got his start as a photographer in the city. Despite his long career in Europe, he was thoroughly of Cape Town. Both of these photos–the Bo-Kaap & mother & daughter at a Muslim wedding–are, too. RIP, George.

This is really sad to hear. I count myself lucky just to have had the opportunity to have direct contact with George Hallet’s work, through the archives at the Library of Birmingham. Was always in awe.

….. so sad to hear … George Hallet a giant in the arts world passing … I remember sitting hours with him telling us his stories of his travels and exploits across the world , camera in hand of events he was privilege to capture and memorialize…. some of my last conversation was him telling me of the drums of rolls of undeveloped film he still has of Distrix 6, Apartheid up raising, private and public pictures of Nelson Mandela and others that will need another life time to process … He took the most beautiful theatre pictures…..Buckingham Palace District Six – Richard Reeves play in 2000 … with the greats on stages !!!
