DENOSA saddened to announce the passing of its Head of Bargaining, Organising and Campaigns after a short illnessThe Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa (DENOSA) is deeply saddened to announce the passing of its Head of Bargaining, Organising and Campaigns at its head offices, Jabulane Christian Magagula, in the early morning yesterday after a short illness.
As the Chief Negotiator for DENOSA, Magagula was representing DENOSA members and was the voice of nurses at the bargaining tables both in the public and private sectors. Amongst the many issues he was battling out on behalf of nurses at the Public Health Social Development Sectoral Bargaining Chamber (PHSDSBC) are the fair treatment and protection of nurses in the workplace as well as payment of risk/danger allowance for nurses as they are faced with higher risk of COVID-19 often without personal protective equipment (PPE); as well as the dispute that the organisation, together with other unions, has lodged against government for its failure to not implement salary adjustment of public servants from the 1st of April 2020 as agreed in the bargaining chamber.
Cde JC, as he was affectionately known, was very religious and as such was extremely passionate about fairness and justice. His passing is a great loss not only to the nursing fraternity, but to collective bargaining chambers as he was one of the senior council members.
His contribution to the profession from the labour front is immense, and one of the highlights of his work was the conclusion of salary review of nurses in 2007 during the signing of the Occupation-Specific Dispensation (OSD). He also championed the agreement for government to pay nurses a uniform allowance in 2005 when nurses were buying their uniform from their own pockets.
His astuteness and sharp bargaining mind is a great loss to the organized labour.
DENOSA conveys its sincere condolences to his family and colleagues.

One of our beloved Labour members, Mr Jabulane Magagula, unexpectedly passed away on 06 July 2020.
The late Mr Magagula had been an active member of the Council from 2002, up until his untimely demise. In his tenure, apart from serving as the current Chief Negotiator, for a period, for DENOSA, he was also nominated as the Vice-Chairperson (Labour), for a term. Mr Magagula also served on the board of the Executive Committee of the Council, with his usual zest.
He is fondly remembered as being a righteous, jovial and humble man who put the interests of the workers, above any other. He was a member of the nursing fraternity himself and was passionate about the cause of health care workers.Mr Magagula’s passing has affected us all, deeply, and we will miss his ready smile, the warmth he exuded and his commitment to the vision of the Council.
Our sympathy and prayers are extended to the dearly departed’s family, friends and loved ones.
Funeral arrangements are in progress, and will be communicated to the various bargaining councils, by DENOSA.
The Council will host a memorial service (via virtual platform) for the late Mr Magagula.
“Some people come into our lives and quickly go. Some stay for a while, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never, ever the same.” Rest in Peace Mr Jabulane Magagula. Hamba Kahle.
