Two more men are charged with capital murder in the death of an 8-year-old in a shooting at the Riverchase Galleria mall near Birmingham on Friday.
Three people are now charged with the child’s murder.
Royta Giles Jr., was killed when he was struck by a bullet during a shooting inside the mall. Three other bystanders were injured when they were also caught in the cross fire.
Royta Giles Jr. was a rising 3rd grader. The eight year old was shopping at the Galleria Mall with his family Friday, July 3rd, when he got caught in the crossfire of a shootout.
“We want Royta’s family to know we absolutely loved him,” said Bessemer Superintendent Autumn Jeter. A text alerted school officials something was wrong Friday. “When I got the pictures I said please don’t let this be what I think it is,” recalled former Asst. Principal Van James. He said it was like a shock wave going through the school district.
James and others described their memories of Royta. “I’ve used words charismatic, energetic, bright the list goes one and on,” said James. Royta was so convincing and had such a way with words that James suggested the student become a lawyer. Royta loved learning and his personality was described as infectious.
Principal Dr. Anjell Edwards says she is brainstorming a way to honor Royta. She would like to have an award in his memory for a second grade student.
She and other educators urge parents to talk with their children honestly about what has happened. Explain to them how to peacefully resolve conflicts.
“When you resolve conflict the way it was Friday at the mall there is a chance somebody will lose their life or get injured,” said Dr. Edwards. She hopes that will be a lesson her students take with them forever.
Hoover police on Tuesday announced the arrests of King Gary Williams and Demetrius Dewayne Jackson Jr. Both men, who are 19 and from Birmingham, were charged with capital murder and three counts of second-degree assault and were being held without bail.
Hoover police announced the same charges against Montez Moses Miracle Coleman, 22, of Birmingham. Coleman also remains in the Jefferson County Jail without bond.Giles was shot in the head while waiting to get into the Children’s Place in the mall to buy Fourth of July outfits. The child was with his mother, Jesslyn Layfield, stepfather Anthony Jones, and his two younger sisters.
