Tributes To Mike Gravel

We were saddened to learn earlier today of the passing of Mike Gravel, former U.S. Senator and presidential candidate from our home state of Alaska, and one of our favorite political figures and human beings. Senator Gravel was a stalwart in the struggle for peace and justice, who never backed down in the face of political pushback or adversity. He showed enormous fortitude, integrity, and leadership throughout his long political career, standing up to corruption, the military-industrial complex, U.S. imperialism and the forever wars, as well as the politicians and corporations who were pulling the proverbial strings. Senator Gravel fought to end the Vietnam-era military draft, understanding the discriminatory and unjust nature of the law. Risking his career and even his personal freedom, Senator Gravel’s decision to read passages of the Pentagon Papers into the Congressional record in 1971 is one of the greatest acts of moral courage in our nation’s history. He was also a steadfast advocate for direct democracy — to give people greater voice in the political process, something we desperately need, especially today. Senator Gravel’s progressive legacy lives on in the work we do to help build a more peaceful, equal and democratic society, now and into the future. He was quite simply a national treasure, and we will miss him for all the good he did for our country. Mike Gravel, Presente!
Jane and I are saddened by the passing of Sen. Mike Gravel. He was dedicated to ending forever wars and bringing more Americans into the political process. His courage will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his loved ones.
This morning I was sorry to hear of the passing of Mike Gravel. Mike was a Senator from Alaska well before my time, from 1969 to 1981, known for his work to end the draft and for putting the Pentagon Papers into the public record. But I got to know him a bit in his return to public life, as an advocate for a national ballot initiative process and as a presidential candidate. Colorado is stronger because we have a citizen petition process to place things on the ballot. Mike advocated for a similar national citizen petition process. To solve issues that politicians are unlikely to solve because they are self-interested, including campaign finance reform and ending gerrymandering (which Colorado successfully did at the ballot box), a national petition process is probably the best hope. Mike raised the issues that others were often scared to, and his vision and bravery are an inspiration to all of us.
