You ever read people’s “RIP, you were like a brother to me” posts and think, “he didn’t even like you” or “you barely knew him?”
That happens a lot here in FB land when people pass, but that’s not the case with the loss of Randy Parker. He really was so special to so many people.
Anyone who knew him had a special memory or story with him. He checked in on everyone even when he was hurting himself…He made you feel like you mattered even when you felt like you didn’t, and man could he make you laugh! In my crazy years, he and I were a duo that probably should’ve been kept apart, lol. But those memories are some of the best I have if I’m being honest…and they are countless.
I met Randy when I was about 15 or 16 years old. I was supposed to beat him up because a friend of mine had a problem with him over a girl or something stupid like that. Well, we ended up becoming great friends instead. We were inseparable for years… I think he even lived with me for a short time! And don’t even get me started on the wild times on Macomber Ave!! (We actually started a fake fraternity one time to get UMASS girls to come to hang out)
Once I got my life right, Randy would continue to reach out and cheer me on…while others that I thought were friends quietly fell away and some even mocked my new life path, Randy never stopped supporting me.
He would reach out to me when a friend needed help getting clean…he would ask me to pray for people that were struggling. And when he was struggling we would talk through it and he would thank me endlessly for always being a friend.
I guess I’m posting this because in some sense it’s therapeutic for me, but in another sense, I want to make sure everyone realizes that what matters most in this life are relationships. Randy was never a rich man, but he possessed wealth that others couldn’t even imagine. He was the living definition of the word “friend.” His legacy speaks for itself.
It blesses me to know that I was able to share my faith with him and that he came to find a faith of his own. We often read statements like, “you were one of a kind” when someone passes, well in this case it is true. Randy was an anomaly…he loved every one! He would do ANYTHING for ANYONE, including strangers.
We can all learn a lot from his life. He just wasn’t meant to grow old, I guess. My only wish is that he would’ve treated himself as well as he treated others.
I’m so sorry for Austin, Pam, and Jake. I’m sorry for everyone who’s feeling this loss…and there are so many!
I love you, my friend. Until we meet again.
