Dear NY Newsday family, It is with great sadness that I share that our colleague and friend Jessie Mangaliman has passed away. I got the news from another friend and colleague, Kay Foran. I saw Jessie earlier this year at the memorial service for NYN alumnus Mark Hinojosa, who as you know was Kay’s husband. Jessie died Monday morning in California apparently of a massive heart attack. “Jessie died this morning in California of a massive heart attack. The onetime Newsday reporter was 62. He and his longtime partner, John Meyer, were married in recent years and had bought a house in Berkeley.
The sad news comes to me in a phone call tonight from Maureen Fan.
Jessie was brought from the Philippines to the U.S. by his adoptive missionary family and, after finishing high school and college, became a reporter. In his years with New York Newsday, in the 1980s and ’90s, he was an active member of the AAJA New York chapter.
After several years as a reporter at the San Jose Mercury News, Jessie left journalism. He was with the Kaiser Health Foundation before his most recent position with the San Francisco Federal Reserve Bank.
Jessie will be remembered fondly by his old Newsday colleagues and his journalism contacts in New York.”Ever since learning of Jessie Mangaliman’s sudden death this week, I’ve been struggling for words. Jessie, a Pulitzer-winning journalist who upheld the dignity of all people and never forgot his own roots in poverty in the Philippines or his years of living undocumented in America — and never flaunted his many accomplishments and talents. I was always thrilled when our paths crossed and would bask in the warmth of his kindness and positivity; he made an impact on everyone and everything he touched. My heart goes out to his husband John, family and many good friends. Rest in peace, dear Jessie!
Sad loss. Jessie Mangaliman, seen smiling in the second row behind the inflated glove, died of a heart attack. He was my colleague at Kaiser Permanente for several years and inevitably my manager. We lunched a couple of times at his favorite Vung Tau restaurant in San Jose, where he once shared a story about working on a factory fishing ship sailing off Alaska, gutting fish.
