I’ve visited Taiwan many times. Many years ago, I watched former president Lee Teng-hui giving a speech on TV. I don’t speak Mandarin or Taiwanese, but even I managed to understand the “China is China, Taiwan is Taiwan” part in it. He loved his country more than anyone else.

While much of politics in East Asia is marked by division and hard feelings, Lee Teng-hui promoted close relations between Taiwan and Japan. He had degrees from Kyoto University, Iowa State, and Cornell. Highly educated and worldly, Taiwan has lost an important man today.
