Word from Mute that Richard H. Kirk has passed away. Cabaret Voltaire, and any number of Kirk’s solo and collabs are just absolutely HUGE to me, this is a major loss. When I was a young industrial neophyte in 9th or 10th grade, I had discovered “the Grey Area of Mute”, Mute’s reissue campaign of pioneers. The Grey Area had a specifically designed CD long-box, so I would just walk around Sam Goody looking for that long-box, and I THINK that’s how I discovered the compilation The Living Legends, which collected their Rough Trade singles from 78-81. I put it on, was scared and confused and put in a drawer. A few months later I took it out again and this time something clicked. He had a long and prolific career, with and without the other Cabs (who also both have had fantastic careers on their own as well), and included many controversial changes in style, some of which even when extreme, still had certain Cabs qualities running through them. So sure, there are people who say they gave up after Chris Watson left, or after they went electro, or after they went synth-pop, or after they went house…but as much as it sounds like they were band jumping bandwagons, on the contrary they were assimilating, influencing etc. For me there isn’t an era of their career I’d write off. I can go on and on but I’ll probably just post some favorite songs and videos.

I am completely devastated. The mastermind of Cabaret Voltaire has passed away, Richard H. Kirk. Since 1973, this band has been the bedrock of early industrial and experimental electronic music, and over the years gone from techno funk to house to electronica. Kirk has done solo projects under different names, and took on the Cabaret Voltaire banner since 2014 by himself. At 65, he has left a legacy of so much music to enjoy, discover, and learn from. So if you never heard of Cabaret Voltaire [unless you saw their Microphonies poster in Ferris Bueller’s bedroom, which doesn’t really count] then you should check them out. I have been following this band since the early 80s and loved them ever since. Anyone who knows me, knows this. I am saddened. Now, him and Ian Curtis and Genesis P-orrige can collaborate above us. Rest in power, Richard Harold Kirk.
