Polling stations opened in nine states on the east coast of the United States, at six o'clock in the morning (Tuesday) (11:00 GMT), for the presidential elections in which Republican Donald Trump and Democrat Hillary Clinton are competing.

Voters began casting their votes at the polls in the states: Connecticut, Indiana, Kentucky, Maine, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Vermont, and Virginia.

Polling offices will open in other states at a later date.

Americans also vote to renew seats in Congress, and in several local referendums.
