“Okaz” learned that the intellectual property system granted the Saudi Authority for Intellectual Property the right to seek the assistance of the competent security authorities, and whoever it deems experienced and specialized, to support its inspectors in performing their tasks in reporting intellectual property thefts. A draft that will be approved within 90 days revealed that the aim of the system is to improve the legislative environment for intellectual property, define general principles, organize its activities, and strengthen its legal foundations. The prospective system indicated that intellectual property in the Kingdom is specialized in 12 areas that it is responsible for protecting. These include copyright, related rights, inventions, industrial designs, layout designs, plant varieties, and trademarks. The prospective system included the national heritage (folklore) in the protected intellectual property. The heritage is the public property of the state, and the competent authority in the Kingdom is responsible for identifying, sponsoring and defending it, in accordance with the public interests of the Kingdom. The financial rights of the intellectual property domains are transferable in whole or in part, through inheritance, or by any other legal disposal. Domains of intellectual property that are contrary to Islamic law or public morals, or whose exploitation leads to harm to health, or result in damage to the environment, are not protected. The prospective system allows intellectual property generated by artificial intelligence to be protected, when the contribution of a natural person is significant.
