Known for her role in Fatih Akın’s famous film Against the Wall, Birol Ünel succumbed to cancer. Birol Ünel, who took part in many theater plays and films in Germany, passed away at the age of 59. Rest in peace.

Really sad news that Birol Ünel has died so young at 59.
For a generation of young Turkish emigrants (even those of us who weren’t in Germany), his work and the broader corpus of Fatih Akın were windows into both Turkey and the diaspora.

When I first moved to Berlin, I used to see him quite often in the neighborhood. An intense figure to say the least. Sad to read of his passing. If you haven’t seen his performance in GEGEN DIE WAND (HEAD-ON), you really ought to. RIP Birol Ünel.
