This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.

A Northwest music legend of international renown, Bela Siki died Thursday, at 97, after a lifetime of excellence on the concert stage and in the classroom.

Over the weekend, we received the sad news of a great loss to the classical music community in Seattle. Bela Siki, faculty pianist emeritus at the University of Washington, died last Thursday at age 97. He began studying piano at age 8 in his home city of Budapest, Hungary. His teachers were legends of 19th and 20th century piano, including Erno Dohnanyi and Dinu Lipatti. One of Bela Siki’s many distinguished students in his studios at the University of Washington in Seattle and the Cincinnati College Conservatory of Music was Anton Nel. Anton has appeared since the early 1980s at the Seattle Chamber Music Society. Anton says of his late teacher Bela Siki: “I was impressed with his almost transcendental calm and kind demeanor and also the speed with which the lesson seemed to go by. At the end of the hour so much had been accomplished, and it seemed like no time had passed at all. I know I did some of my best playing in those lessons.”

Our hearts go out to the family, friends, colleagues and students of Bela Siki.

In deep gratitude as I say goodbye to my piano teacher Bela Siki who died yesterday.

He shaped my life as a professional pianist taking me to the very depths of the sacred art of classical piano. He was the master of exquisite sound that no one could achieve except maybe his own teacher, the great Radu Lupu.

I can attribute my keen discipline and practice habits plus a deep love for intricate and delicate expression to him.
We shared a love for all French music, Bach, secret cigarettes outside the back door at UW and he encouraged me to study in France.

I will never forget what will live on through the music I play.

Words cannot express this loss.
For more about him, see the Seattle times today 10/31/20.
