The painting of American actress Marilyn Monroe, painted by Andy Warhol in 1946, became the most expensive painting of the twentieth century, after it was sold for $ 195 million at an auction organized by Christie's in 2022.
According to the media, the painting was bought by Larry Gagosian, the owner of the famous New York gallery of Armenian origin, who is not known whether he is acting on his own behalf or on behalf of another client. Christie's auction house estimated this work at about $ 200 million, but it was sold for $ 195 million.
The painting, which simulates Monroe's face in 1964, with bright yellow hair, a pink face and light blue eye shadow, is one of five paintings by Warhol of Monroe.
The painting is among a series of portraits that Warhol painted of the actress following her death in 1962. Its title refers to an incident in which a woman fired a pistol at a set of four portraits of Marilyn in Warhol's studio, although this painting did not hit her.
Monroe was one of Hollywood's most prominent stars before she died of a drug overdose at her home in Los Angeles on August 4, 1962.
