Three dead, eight injured in Oakland County Oxford High School mass shooting

Tate Myre Death : Authorities say three teenage students were killed and about eight others sustained gunshot injuries following a shooting Midday Tuesday at Oxford High School in Oakland County, just northwest of Detroit.

According to Oakland County sheriff’s deputies, the incident happened at about 12:51 p.m. Officers responded to an active shooter report at Oxford High School. Arriving officers took an unidentified suspect into custody. A code red lockdown was immediately imposed by the school authorities as officers fought to contain the situation. Two students were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third one succumbed to her injuries on the way to the hospital.

The deceased students were identified as 16-year-old Tate Myre, 14-year-old Hana St. Juliana, and 17-year-old Madisyn Baldwin.

According to Sheriff Michael Bouchard, “Not all schools have metal detectors; they have one entrance. Should every school and every building have metal detectors? You know, it’s very expensive, but I can’t answer that question, I don’t know,” about eight persons sustained injuries, three were listed in a critical condition on arrival to the hospital. The injuries victims were identified only as the following ;

  • A 17-year-old female was in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest at St. Joseph Mercy Oakland Hospital in Pontiac.
  • A 14-year-old female was in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the chest and neck at Hurley Medical Center in Flint.
  • A 15-year-old male was in critical condition with gunshot wounds to the head at McLaren Oakland.
  • A 47-year-old teacher was discharged from McLaren Lapeer Region Hospital after being treated for gunshot wounds to the shoulder.
  • A 17-year-old male was in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the hip at Ascension Providence Rochester Hospital
  • A 14-year-old male was in serious condition with gunshot wounds to the jaw and hand at McLaren Oakland.
  • A 17-year-old female was in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the neck at McLaren Oakland.
  • A 15-year-old male was in stable condition with gunshot wounds to the leg at McLaren Oakland.

Investigators said the teen suspect, who was on suicide watch, was seen armed with a gun by a deputy assigned to the school, coming down the hallway. About seven rounds of live ammunition and a 9mm Sig Sauer SP 2022 pistol were recovered from the unidentified teen. He was taken into custody without incident. Officials obtained a search warrant and searched the teen’s parents’ home. An attorney has been hired by the parents.

Sheriff Bouchard said the department is unaware of the suspect having any prior encounters with law enforcement. He also said the department is not aware of any credible threats of violence before the shooting.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the teen’s father bought the handgun on Black Friday four days before the deadly shooting. The suspect’s father is said to have bought a third magazine that hasn’t been located.
