Julio Lugo Death – Cause of Death: Julio Lugo, 45-year-old, a former Red Sox shortstop and Houston Astros shortstop passed away from an apparent heart attack. He died on Monday, November 15, 2021, in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, just one day before his 46th birthday. Enrique Rojas/ESPN @Enrique_Rojas1 tweeted that Julio Lugo’s family told him of the death of the former MLB player, that he presumably died due to a heart attack. Lugo was 45 years old.
He was born on November 16, 1975, in Barahona, Dominican Republic. He is the elder brother of the baseball pitcher, Ruddy Lugo. He was drafted by the Astros in 1994 from Connors State College in Oklahoma, according to KHOU 11 Sports anchor Jason Bristol. He is married to Surki and together they gave birth to a son and two daughters. He was arrested outside Minute Maid Park after an incident in which he allegedly hit his wife on April 30, 2003. He was formally charged with misconduct assault and later acquitted after his wife testified he did not mean to hurt her. He was a beloved husband and a father. Josh Reddick @RealJoshReddick said in a tweet that Lugo help him in his early career with his routine and to stick to it regardless of the outcome. Sports Cards Austin @sportsjp in a tweet also expressed how saddened they are for the passing of Lugo, and they send their thoughts to his family and friends.
He played shortstop in the Red Sox’ 2007 World Series season, in his first year out of four years, he signed a $36 million contract with the team as a free agent. He was brought in to replace gifted Alex Gonzalez. Due to his speed on the basepaths, he was signed in part to provide more offense, in a position that had been filled on a long-term basis with no success since the 2004 trade of Nomar Garciaparra. In his debut season with the Red Sox, Lugo hit only .237 with a .294 on-base percentage but he did steal 33 bases. In the postseason, his bat helped the Red Sox win their second championship in four years. Lugo hit .271 (13 for 48) over Boston’s 14-game playoff campaign. He also played for the Houston Astros, Tampa Bay Rays, Los Angeles Dodgers, Baltimore Orioles, and Atlanta Braves, in his 12 major league seasons.
