The establishment of “Etidal”, the Global Center for Combating Extremism, was not just an information and news center aimed at tracking terrorism and chasing spoilers through the alleys of the World Wide Web.

Wars today, in light of the tremendous technological progress, are no longer dependent on wars in their traditional form “tank, pilot, soldier, ship and weapon”, but rather on “hackers” working to destroy systems and paralyze countries and organizations and push them to either pay electronic blood money, as happened recently, or destroy their capabilities and control in its various systems.

Extremism and terrorism paid great attention to technology and pushed efforts to establish armies based on confronting ideology instead of armies. Terrorist organizations used social media such as Twitter, Facebook and Instagram, and deceived young people at the beginning, but later they reached the distortion of the mental image and the use of these platforms in their war.

The center includes specialized and prominent international experts in the field of combating extremist media discourse, traditionally and digitally, in the various languages and dialects most used by extremists. Advanced analytical models are being developed to locate digital media platforms, highlight extremism sites and secret sources of polarization and recruitment activities.

Computer professor Dr. Muhammad Farsi believes the importance of investing in this huge center and shifting from fighting extremism to establishing an electronic army and achieving the goals for which it was set, such as combating extremism in the means of communication in all languages, tracking down abusers, and spreading awareness among people, by verifying information and combating rumors.
