AI Answers Are Changing What the Web Is For

 ·  1 min read

Search engines increasingly answer questions directly rather than listing pages. For the user that is convenient. For the ecosystem that produced the answers it is a structural problem.

What changed

A query that previously produced ten links now frequently produces a generated summary at the top, assembled from those pages. Many users get what they needed and do not click.

Publishers report substantial declines in traffic from search for exactly the kind of factual queries that summaries handle well.

Why it matters beyond publishers

The web’s free information was funded largely by advertising against traffic. Remove the traffic and the funding model for producing that information goes with it.

What replaces it is unclear, and the summaries depend on the information continuing to be produced.

How publishers are responding

Blocking crawlers, which removes them from the summaries and from the search results that drive what traffic remains.

Licensing deals with AI companies, available to large publishers and not to small ones.

Moving to subscriptions, newsletters and communities – channels the summariser does not intermediate.

And writing what a summary cannot replace: direct experience, original reporting, opinion, and things that require being someone specific.

What it means for readers

Convenience now, with a narrowing of what gets produced over time. Summaries are also confidently wrong sometimes, and the source that would have let you check is one click further away.

The reasonable habit

Click through for anything that matters. The summary is a starting point, not a citation.
