Tributes To Bernie Scanlan
Below are some of the statements shared across social media users’ timelines on the death of Scanlan.
“I am saddened to hear that my old friend Bernie Scanlan passed away earlier today.
We met in 1973 at the Brisbane Hare Krishna Temple. He spoke the bhakti philosophy in a very strong and convincing way, and thus became very influential in my life.
He soon after found a Christian community that he found very nurturing and took shelter there, though we remained friendly forever. We shared the same birthday and especially since the dawn of Facebook never missed sending birthday well wishes.
Bernie was an adventurer and philanthropist who marched, or rather cycled, to his own drum beat. He opened an orphanage in Africa and through his own efforts sustained the children there with his various fundraising efforts. It is on the verge now of being self sustaining.
In many ways he was the quintessential Aussie bloke. He loved his footy and a beer. He was also a man with extraordinary love for God who did immense good in the world.
He volunteered for bush fire relief, was involved in indigenous justice and worked with refugees. So much more.
I saw him about 5 years ago when he visited me at Govinda Valley and we spent a memorable sunny afternoon watching the hang gliders at the nearby lookout. I am deeply saddened that I won’t see him again but feel confident that on his soul journey he has achieved a wonderful destination.”
“RIP Bernie Scanlan aka Bud aka Good old boy. You’ll be missed by so many.
Tragically hit by a truck whilst heading north on his bike for his yearly pilgrimage to Darwin.
First met Bernie nearly 40 years ago. He was a wild and lovable guy back then always up for an adventure. We would randomly bump into each other either in Adelaide and Darwin and he’d say ‘ hey bud’ always on a mission to raise funds and awareness for the plight of the needy. We did a few fundraisers together for his orphanage children in Uganda and I know that all those that knew him were touched by his generous humble soul. Feeling very sad and you will be missed by so many. An Angel on Earth has returned to the arms of his beloved saviour. Not my saviour but his & a good man is now in His Heaven. Big Love Bernie , so many memories of our early days together.”
