CAMBRIDGE — Former Cambridge councillor and MPP Bill Barlow passed away at his Cambridge home on Sunday. He was 90 years old.
Barlow served as alderman in Galt from 1967 to 1972, and then as a councillor for the newly-amalgamated city of Cambridge from 1973 to 1977.
He then went on to serve as Progressive Conservative MPP for Cambridge and North Dumfries for two terms, from 1981 to 1987.
“I was fortunate to know ‘Bowtie Bill’, as he was affectionately known for his trademark bow tie, for many years. Bill was truly committed to public service and to his community,” Mayor Kathryn McGarry said in a statement.
“He was a true gentleman, respectful, engaged, caring and thoughtful. Even in recent years, he would speak eloquently as a delegate at council on a variety of topical issues. He was extremely passionate about politics, and the growth and development of his beloved Cambridge.”
Barlow was inducted into the Cambridge Hall of Fame last year for his lifelong commitment to the community. He volunteered in a variety of local clubs and community associations for 62 years.
