Sorry to learn of this.. Bill Neikirk was old school Congressional reporter for ChiTrib who gruffly welcomed me to Capitol Hill nearly a generation ago.
He turned out to be humane, funny and a hell of a crisp deadline reporter. Thoughts with family, friends & former colleagues.

Very sad to read of the death of Bill Neikirk, the Tribune’s great economics writer + Washington correspondent. Bill was both decent and demanding, a mentor who freely shared his expertise. I felt lucky to work with someone of his stature. He’ll be missed.

So sad to hear of the passing of Bill Neikirk, my first boss at @chicagotribune in Chicago and later my partner covering Congress in DC. Kind, thoughtful, perpetually curious, mischievously funny. And a master writer who taught me much about writing the Washington lede-all.

Sad to hear of the passing of Bill Neikirk, a legendary Chicago Tribune correspondent. He was one of the kindest guys around, always so generous with his wisdom and good humor. A proud son of a Kentucky, he knew the ways of Washington better than almost anyone. RIP friend.

Bill Neikirk represented the best of journalism and humanity. Forever grateful for my years at the @chicagotribune, learning from giants of the profession like him. It feels like this is the end of an era, and we all are less because he’s gone

Sad news: Bill Neikirk, a veteran of the @AP and @chicagotribune, has passed away at age 82. He was an award-winning journalist, the lyricist for some of the funniest satiric songs in Gridiron Club shows, and an all-round nice guy. RIP.
