“My condolences go out to Brian’s family and all those who had the opportunity to interact with him,” Kent State head coach Rob Senderoff said in the release. “He was an integral part of our program over the last six years and played a vital role in the lives of so many of our players, both past and present. He will be incredibly missed.”
A graduate of Central Michigan in 2015, Barnes helped guide the Chippewas to their first MAC regular season championship in 12 seasons during the 2015 season. Barnes then got his graduate degree from Kent State in 2017. After spending time as a graduate assistant, Barnes was promoted to Kent State’s Video Coordinator and Special Assistant to the Director of Basketball Operations in September of 2018.
During Barnes’ time with the Golden Flashes, they made the NCAA Tournament once during the 2017 season, losing in the first round. Kent State had a strong 2020-21 campaign, but was not able to finish strong enough to reach the postseason.
The Golden Flashes won eight of their final 11 games of the season to finish 15-7 overall and 12-6 in league play. That earned Kent State a 4-seed in the MAC Tournament, but the season came to an end with an 85-63 loss to 5-seed Ohio in the first round of the tournament.”
