Vehicle servicing includes items that prevent serious damage and items that exist to fill an invoice. The distinction is reasonably clear.
What genuinely matters
Oil and filter at the manufacturer’s interval. Oil degradation causes engine wear that is expensive and irreversible. This is the single highest-value maintenance item.
Tyres – pressure, tread depth and age. Pressure affects safety, handling and fuel consumption, and is free to check. Rubber degrades with age regardless of tread.
Brake fluid, which absorbs moisture over time and loses effectiveness under heat. Replacement at the specified interval matters and is frequently skipped.
Timing belt where fitted, at the specified interval. Failure typically destroys the engine.
Coolant, which loses its corrosion inhibitors over years.
What is frequently oversold
Engine flushes, which are rarely necessary on a well-maintained engine and can dislodge deposits that then block passages.
Fuel system cleaning as a routine service, where modern fuel additives handle it.
Air conditioning service on a schedule rather than when performance drops.
And premium fluids at large markups where the specification is what matters, not the brand.
How to reduce cost
Follow the manufacturer’s schedule rather than the garage’s suggested one, which is frequently more aggressive.
Get a second opinion on anything major. Ask to see the worn part.
An independent specialist for your make is usually cheaper than a franchise and often better.
The cheapest habit
Checking tyre pressures monthly. Two minutes, free, and it affects safety and running cost measurably.
