Damn. Goodbye Cleve “Monster Man” Hall. This is us last January 2020 when his band played the Blue Lagoon. I was looking forward to meeting up again after the pandemic but I guess it will be a little longer now. I first knew of Cleve Hall, his daughter Constance and their crew growing up and working in the Santa Clarita Valley. In a middle-class city of white conservatives it’s hard to miss the goth gang. I’d see them at my various places of work and once in a while chat about music & monsters (he was a huge Godzilla fan). Fast-forward a couple years to 2012. I was invited to his house for a post-production party for his then soon-to-be premier SyFy reality show, Monster Man, which followed Cleve’s company SOTA FX as they built physical props and costumes for sci-fi, horror and cult films. He was always unashamedly himself, creative, clever and gruesome in the best sort of ways. He also had a knack for making you feel welcome, whether we were in his actual home or not. Even after we hadn’t seen each other in years, we picked up in Santa Cruz where we had left off like no time had passed. Really shocked and sad to hear about his leaving this realm. Sending my love and thoughts to you, Constance. See you in Valhalla, Cleve.
I’ll be lighting a candle tonight. My friend Cleve Hall passed away. Dave and I met him many years ago at conventions and we became friends. I usually got a chance to see him when we visited California. I’m so shocked and sad to hear. My heart goes to his family.
