Tributes To Courtney Hall

Across social media users’ timelines are statements that show respect, admiration, and gratitude towards Hall as people mourn the passing.

I am devastated by the news of the death of Courtney Hall, one of my all-time favorite Owl football players. He was only 52.

When Courtney was inducted into the Rice Athletic Hall of Fame, he asked me to make his presentation. I told the story about his recruitment to Rice out of Banning High in Los Angeles. Because he was only 16 when he graduated from high school, Watson Brown had to promise Courtney’s mother, Barbara, that he would be red-shirted his freshman year until he matured physically. The problem was, during preseason drills, Courtney was far and away our best offensive lineman. Watson had to go back to Courtney’s mom and ask her permission for Courtney to play as a true freshman. She acquiesced, and Courtney started all 44 games of his career. He went on to a solid eight-year career in the NFL.
This summer, Courtney was to assume a position on the Rice Board of Governors. This is a truly sad day for all of us who knew him.

“Social media sites are reporting that Courtney Hall a former NFL center passed away at the age of 52.

Hall was a center and guard in the National Football League for the San Diego Chargers. He was a four-time Pro Bowler and captained the only Chargers’ football team to play in a Super Bowl. Hall’s death was announced on April 30, 2021. Hall was a former Rice Owl and started in all 4 years of his college career. In 1989, he was a 2nd round pick of the San Diego Chargers. Hall played his entire 8-year NFL career in San Diego. Mr. Hall is the ninth player from the 1994 Chargers team that passed away way too young.”
