Very sad to hear the news of the passing of David Bathers, Vice President of Penmaenmawr Museum. David was a remarkable man. Kind and generous, hugely knowledgeable with an infectious enthusiasm and a brilliant sense of humour and fun.
You may recall that a couple of years ago David and I set about refurbishing the plaque on the hillside above Penmaenmawr commemorating the crew of the American bomber, Bachelors’ Baby, that crashed in January 1944 with the loss of five young airmen and their dog, Booster. Originally unveiled in the early 1980s, forty years of Welsh weather had taken its toll on the memorial and we were pleased to have it restored to its former glory in time for the 75th anniversary of the accident.
On a balmy, January day in 2019 – completely opposite to the weather conditions on the same day seventy-five years earlier – we held a small service of remembrance and David laid a wreath. Just one of the many projects that David will be remembered for.
We are still working on getting more details about the death, as a family statement on the death is yet to be released.
