Very sad to hear that David Mercer has passed away. One of the best commentators in tennis and many other sports, and his voice will be missed sadly by colleagues and fans.

And of course, David was forever associated with the Dubai tournament as its “MC”. Last year he “retired” from it, and received a trophy. Here he is at his last Dubai tournament with Tsitsipas and Federer. RIP David Mercer

Sad to hear of the passing of our colleague David Mercer, tennis umpire turned commentator. He umpired the 1984 Wimbledon men’s final between McEnroe and Connors and was also a qualified lawyer and enthusiast of other sports, including rugby.

Very sorry to hear of the passing of tennis umpire and commentator for many years, David Mercer. Umpired the McEnroe-Connors 1984 Wimbledon Final. As a regular tennis viewer he will be missed greatly. Hope he’s enjoying a glass of wine in a better place. May he rest in peace.

Extremely saddened to learn of the passing of David Mercer, a fabulous commentator and whose company I enjoyed immensely. David loved badminton and provided his expertise during this years @YonexAllEngland. The world of sport has lost a wonderful voice @BBCSport

Ah man, David Mercer. Hearing his voice on the tennis is so nostalgic. Like wrapping myself in a warm blanket. I remember interviewing him for @SportMagUK way back, and I could have stayed on the phone for hours listening to him. RIP
