R.I.P Derek Mahon
AUTUMN DAY
after Rilke
Lord, it is time; the vast summer declines.
Now cast your shadow on the sun-dial
And in the meadow let the winds celebrate.
Ordain fulfilment for the last nectarines;
Grant them another day of southern light,
Urge them on to completion and instil
A final savour into the heavy vines.
Whoever has no home now will be without,
Whoever is alone now will so remain –
Will sit late into the night, and read, and write
Long letters, and drift forlornly hither and yon
In city parks where dead leaves congregate.
Derek Mahon one of the foremost contemporary Irish poets, died in Cork on Thursday night after a short illness. He was 78.

Deeply saddened by the death of Derek Mahon. His ‘A Disused Shed in County Wexford” was one of the works that made poetry a strong and fresh force in my young consciousness. May he rest gently.

Sad to hear about the death of poet #DerekMahon. His poem Kinsale is one of my favorites. It speaks about the trajectory to peace for this island – ‘A future forbidden to no one.’

Sad to hear that legendary Belfast poet Derek Mahon has passed away. He left us many great works (his latest, “Against the Clock” was published in 2018) but my favourite is definitely this one, read here by the man himself. Thanks Derek & RIP

Derek Mahon has died. Some of the poems I hold closest to my heart are his. In this blog post I wrote about his masterpiece ‘Courtyards in Delft’. I will always be a strange child with a taste for verse. Goodbye, Derek Mahon

It’s hard to say now how much Derek Mahon meant to me as a younger reader. His estranged, still attached, view of Belfast, the distance education created in him from his place, the wildness, the precision, then Trinity and Kinsale. Bless you for the freedom

The sun rises in spite of everything
and the far cities are beautiful and bright.
I lie here in a riot of sunlight
watching the day break and the clouds flying.
Everything is going to be all right.
Derek Mahon RIP

who, after a lifetime struggling with new ideas,
sent out his Bacchae to the woods and glens
to dance devotion to the god of vines
under the rocks, under the moonlit pines.”

Rest in peace, Derek Mahon. If you ever think, like him,
“I know too much
To be anything any more…”
I suggest you read his work. You’ll know a lot more than you did before you started. #RI
