• A man is required to fast two months as expiation. Is it correct for him to intend to fast the month of Ramadan within the two months, for example? For example, he fasts the month of Sha'ban and follows it with Ramadan to complete the fast of the two months. Is that correct for him or not?
Answer: No, it is not valid for him. Fasting the two months is different from fasting Ramadan. He has to fast the two months other than Ramadan for expiation. He fasts two consecutive months, Rajab and Sha’ban, Shawwal and Dhul-Qi’dah for sixty days, and so on. As for Ramadan, it is an independent obligation from the pillars of Islam.
• If a person travels at night and will reach his place of residence after Suhoor, should he abstain and remain fasting, or how do you direct him?
Answer: He is by choice, if he wishes to fast, or if he wishes to break the fast. If some of the day passes by while he is fasting during his travel, then he has the choice, if he wishes, he intends to break the fast, and if he wishes, he fasts. Fasting while traveling is permissible and leaving it is permissible, praise be to God.
• My grandfather passed away through my father, and he owed fasting from Ramadan, and my father and I fasted on his behalf for eight days, and my father had eight days. Is that correct, may God reward you with good?
Answer: Thank you, may God reward you well. The Prophet, may God’s prayers and peace be upon him, says: Whoever dies and owes a fast, his guardian fasts on his behalf, meaning: his relative. If you and the father fulfill what the deceased owed, may God reward you well.
