Murray John Finlay Luxton Death – Cause of Death – Hon John Luxton, former National MP for Matamata and Karapiro, sadly passed away at the age of 75. Luxton died in Wellington after a long illness on the 16th of November 2021. Murray John Finlay Luxton CNZM QSO was a New Zealand National Party politician who served as a Member of Parliament from 1987 to 2002. He was the Chairman of DairyNZ, the organization that represents all New Zealand dairy farmers from 2008 to 2015.
He was birthed in Morrinsville on the 14th of September 1946 to father, Jack Luxton. Luxton attended the Hamilton Boys’ High School and Massey University (BAgSc, DipAgSc, DipBusSc, MMgt). He was an intelligent MP for Matamata and a very competent Agriculture, Land and Trade Minister for NZ. He contributed greatly to many organizations.
Luxton received the Queen’s Birthday Honours in the 2003, He was appointed a Companion of the Queen’s Service Order for public services and was made a Companion of the New Zealand Order of Merit, for services to the dairy industry, in the 2017 New Year Honours. Luxton was also awarded in 2013 the Massey University’s Sir Geoffrey Peren Medal and in 2016 was awarded D.Sc. by Lincoln University.
Hon Dr Nick Smith said in a post; “Saddened at passing today of Hon John Luxton who was a savvy MP for Matamata and capable Agriculture, Land and Trade Minister for NZ who contributed much both in and beyond Parl as Chair of Diary NZ and many other organisations. Worked most closely with John as parliamentary colleague for 12 years and then as Environment Minister when John Co-Chaired Waikato River Authority with Tainui.
Awesome combo of capable farmer, smart businessman, passionate NZer who was into making practical progress on issues like improving water quality and working with iwi. Condolences to John’s family who must take huge pride in all he contributed to region and our nation.”

John gave 15 years of incredible service to our community and to the National Party. As well as many more as the chairman of DairyNZ and amongst the farming community. Thank you for all of your dedication, loyalty and tireless commitment, John and may you Rest In Peace. My thoughts are with his family during this difficult time.”
