Father Gaston Roberge,85, a legendary figure in the field of film studies, passed away on Wednesday in Kolkata.
A well known film historian, critic and mentor of many filmmakers, Gaston Roberge was a close friend of Satyajit Ray. His love with cinema began after watching Ray’s Pather Panchali. He was so smitten by the movie that he watched the Apu Trilogy in one sitting. After coming to Kolkata, he established Chitrabani, the oldest film study institute under the guidance of Satyajit Ray . He wrote many books on cinema .

New Delhi Film Foundation pays tribute to the great lover of cinema.

“Father Gaston Roberge passed away at 8:20 this morning. He received communion in the morning and had breakfast. Peaceful passing away,” said a message from the headquarters of the Jesuit’s Calcutta province.

Master teacher Father Gaston Roberge (May 27, 1935 to August 26, 2020), the founder of Chitrabani, gave a new dimension to film studies and analysis. Many an established filmmaker and film scholar in Kolkata and outside, would testify that their first understanding of cinema as an art form and as a medium of communication happened at Chitrabani.

Father Gaston Roberge, one of the most promiment film scholar and critics of India has passed away today morning at the age of 85.
