The Remote Jobs That Genuinely Pay Well

 ·  1 min read

Remote work advertising is full of promises about large incomes with minimal experience. The well-paid remote roles are real and the path to them is not short.

Where the money actually is

Software engineering, particularly backend, infrastructure and security. Senior roles at established companies pay well into six figures and are routinely remote.

Sales, specifically enterprise software. Commission-based, high variance, and top performers earn more than most engineers. Fully remote is standard.

Specialised technical writing, solutions architecture, and developer relations – roles requiring both technical depth and communication.

Product management at a senior level.

Data engineering and machine learning engineering, where demand exceeds supply.

What they have in common

Several years of experience, demonstrable. Nearly all of these are senior roles, and the junior versions pay ordinary salaries.

A specific verifiable skill rather than general capability.

And usually a track record someone can check – shipped work, references, a portfolio.

What does not pay well remotely

General administration, data entry, customer support at the first tier, and anything described as flexible online work requiring no experience.

These are real jobs and they pay what the local market pays, which is the point – remote work does not make an ordinary job pay extraordinarily.

The realistic path

Build a specific skill to a level someone will pay for, demonstrate it publicly, and apply for senior roles once you are genuinely senior.

That takes years. Anyone offering a shortcut is selling something.
