The Ecuadorian Emergency Management Department announced that at least 16 people were killed in a landslide in the city of Aluse in central Ecuador.

"So far, information has been received about 16 dead, 16 wounded, and 7 missing," the statement said.

There were 500 people in the disaster area. The Red Cross estimated that 163 homes were destroyed or damaged as a result of the collapse. Search and rescue operations are still going on.

A landslide hit residential buildings Monday night. The Department of Emergency Situations issued a warning of a risk of shifting and rock movement in the city of Alosi.
