The iPhone Duo: Apple’s First Foldable

 ·  1 min read

Apple announced its first folding phone alongside the iPhone 18 Pro line. Reported pricing is around $2,000 with availability as early as October.

Why it matters

Not because Apple is first – it is roughly seven years late, and Samsung, Google, Honor and others have shipped several generations. It matters because Apple entering a category typically settles whether that category is real.

Foldables have remained a small share of the market despite steady improvement. Apple’s arrival will either expand it substantially or demonstrate that the format is a niche regardless of who makes it.

What Apple had time to learn

Being late has advantages. The problems that plagued early foldables – crease visibility, hinge durability, dust ingress, screen protector failures – have been worked on for years by competitors, and the solutions are known.

Apple also had time to watch which form factor won. The book-style fold, opening into a tablet, has clearly outsold the flip format in the premium segment.

The questions that matter

Durability over years rather than months, which no review at launch can answer.

Whether iPadOS-style multitasking arrives on the inner screen, which determines whether the larger display is genuinely useful or just bigger.

And the crease, which every manufacturer claims to have minimised and none has eliminated.

The price question

Two thousand dollars is roughly double a standard flagship. That has been the barrier for every foldable so far, and Apple does not have a history of undercutting.

Worth waiting for reviews

First-generation hardware in a new category, from any manufacturer, is where problems appear. This is a reasonable one to watch rather than pre-order.
