Jack was CUPE Manitoba President from 1965-1981, and was there when

Sad news today: Brother Jack Rodie has passed.
After a short illness, Brother Rodie passed away on June 30th. He will be sorely missed.
Brother Rodie was a long-standing leader of our union, and we wish for the memory of his activism for workers to live on.
He was hired in 1948 by the Greater Winnipeg Water District. This later became part of the City’s Waterworks, Waste and Disposal Department, after Unicity.
Brother Rodie was an activist during the formation of CUPE in 1963. He was elected as President of CUPE Manitoba in 1965. He served in that role until 1981, making him the longest-serving Division President in our province’s history. He also served on the CUPE National Executive Board for over a decade, and was a long-time member of the Manitoba Federation of Labour Executive Committee.
After Jack’s retirement, CUPE Manitoba created the Jack Rodie Award, which is presented at each annual CUPE Manitoba convention to a rank-and-file member who has displayed long-standing commitment to the union movement. In this and other ways, we can continue to honour Brother Jack’s dedication and activism.
CUPE Manitoba feels for Jack’s family members, and we extend our deepest sympathies. We thank you for sharing him with CUPE all those years.
