Zmarł Jerzy Szczakiel – pierwszy indywidualny polski mistrz świata na żużlu. O jego dokonaniach, gdy byłem dzieckiem opowiadał mi dziadek. Wielka strata dla polskiego speedwaya.
Wieczny odpoczynek racz mu dać Panie 🕯️

Jerzy Szczakiel, the first, died after a long illness Flag of Poland individual badge of the world (1973). He preferred to ride than talk about himself, he was a motorcycle master, not a PR. Laconic at formal meetings, effusive with friends. Thank you Jurek for everything. Goodbye RIP
Another viewing of a favourite photo of mine. Ivan Mauger being watched by the man who became World Champion of 1973.
A man who did not accept Communism and therefore was not allowed to grow his sporting career.

Jerzy Szczakiel, the first Polish champion, is dead. He remembered the old slag with a twinkle in his eye. He sometimes complained about this new one, but humorously: Sometimes, instead of looking at the slag, I prefer to sit in the garden and watch my fish swim. There is more going on in the pond than on the track.

I have just found out that one of the sports idols of my field, Jerzy Szczakiel, has passed away. The first Polish World Champion at Zuzl. He won the title in Chorzów in 1973. It was then that he defeated two such brilliant profaners of that time as Ivan Mauger and Ole Olsen.
RIP

Sad to hear that Jerzy Szczakiel has passed away.
I was fortunate to have met him regularly in Torun and other places, and he was such a nice, unassuming man.
World Champion 1973. Rest in Peace Mr. Szczakiel.
