Sad news. The great Czech filmmaker Jiří Menzel died on Saturday at the age of 82, his wife has announced. Menzel’s first feature Closely Observed Trains won an Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film in 1967 and he also directed a number of other much-loved movies. RIP.

Jiri Menzel RIP. He was the rare Czech New Wave who didn’t go to Hollywood but stayed home to fight the good fight. CLOSELY WATCHED TRAINS is one of the key movies of the mid-60s, a brave break with what was up until then a mediocre, nationalist, backward Czech cinema.

Czech film and theatre director, actor, and screenwriter Jiří Menzel died.
Member of the Czech New Wave, he won @TheAcademy Award in 1967 for his first feature film Closely Watched Trains.
He was nominated again for his dark comedy My Sweet Little Village.

We are very sad to hear about the death of Jiří Menzel. He was a good and kind friend to us and a very special person to those who knew and worked with him. Our deepest sympathies go to his family and his loyal assistant Mila. The films he made will keep his memory alive. RIP

So many memories…so many years we spent together making the film cannot believe Jiri you are no more….I remember the first day we met at the cafe in 2010…difficult to express my loss at this moment ..World has lost a great filmmaker and I have lost a friend…Jiri Menzel.
