Sheriff Darin Balaam recounts a memory of casino pioneer John Ascuaga. About 23 years ago a young Balaam and his soon-to-be bride, Heather, were scouting out wedding venues. Suddenly they found themselves in a chance encounter with John Ascuaga in the elevator after meeting with the wedding coordinator. Without explaining why they were there, Mr. Ascuaga started whistling “Here comes the bride.” When the elevator doors opened, Ascuaga turned to the two, said “Congratulations,” and exited the elevator. Proof he knew everything that was happening at his business.
Mr. Ascuaga was also an ardent supporter of law enforcement. He always supported the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and was a tremendous advocate for those wearing the badge.

If you talked to my Grandpa about his life, you would know that one of his proudest accomplishments was working at The Nugget for over 50 years! He started with no experience and was given a few days to prove himself. At the end of that test, he was immediately hired and told to bring any siblings or family members who were as hard-working as he was. I hope he and John Ascuaga bumped into each other on their paths today and maybe sat together at a couple of slot machines. May they both Rest In Peace
