Heartbroken. Just about to start the Seder when I learned that my Dean, John Daly, has suddenly passed. John was extraordinary. When I joined LKSOM last year, for the 1st time in my career I was *glad* to have a Dean. I took notes on his leadership. He cared. Truly and fully. Update: here is his obit…. “Dr. Daly was also passionate about ensuring Temple kept a focus on community medicine and served the North Philadelphia community. He often asked about how the school was supporting Philadelphia communities, recalled Sara Goldrick-Rab, a professor of sociology and medicine. He was concerned too about issues of racial equity within the school; she said her next scheduled meeting with him was to discuss the topic. “He really cared. It really, really showed,” Goldrick-Rab said. Last year, Dr. Daly was instrumental in moving her Hope Center for College, Community, and Justice, which focuses on students’ basic needs, from the college of education to the school of medicine, allowing her to stay at Temple, she said. “I’ve never had a dean like that, and he set a tone.” She described him as an extraordinary leader of a type not often seen in academia, someone who went out of his way to have her cell phone number and call her to check in. “Warm and steady and caring and also just really, really smart,” Goldrick-Rab said of Dr. Daly.”
