Since early yesterday afternoon, I have been digesting the news of the presumed deaths of Gwen Shamblin Lara, Joe Lara, David and Jennifer Martin, Jonathan and Jessica Walters, and Brandon Hannah. Any loss of life is tragic, I knew every single life on board besides Joe Lara. I knew them because I left Remnant Fellowship in 2006. The Martin’s, Walter’s, and Brandon Hannah were leaders and the very first members of Remnant. My family joined in 2002 while it was still small, so we got to know all of these families. I even stayed at the Martin’s and Hannah’s home. I do not rejoice in any of their deaths, in fact, I’m not sure how I feel at this point. It is no secret that Remnant Fellowship is a cult, at least to me and survivors of that church, and to other discerning people on the outside looking in. To those that still belong to the church, I understand that this loss is great. Does it mark the end of an era? Yes, in a way. Does this mean the church will disband? No. I am not that optimistic, The Way International is still going for example. Any good leader and any cult as strong as this one will always have a backup plan. This tragedy may mark the end of Gwen’s controversy, but this is a dawning of a new day for Remnant. To anyone that is curious or has been looking for a sign to leave Remnant for good, I am here to talk. Even if you choose to still belong but need to talk about your grief, I am here. I don’t think you’re wrong for choosing to stay, I don’t judge you for choosing to stay. My mission is not only to help those that need it and want to start their lives over, it’s to spread love and kindness to all. I gain nothing by taking a battle stance, I am against everything Remnant teaches, however, that doesn’t mean I am not capable of empathy and love for everyone. My heart goes out to Elizabeth Hannah, Michael, Erin and all of their children. My heart is with all of the Martin children and the Walters children. My heart is with anyone grieving.
