I need to tell you about this boy named Kahiau Hill. I’m writing this as I continuously cry because he was such a beautiful person. I’ve known him for only ten months. He was a student of mine when I was teaching 7th grade at Iao school. Bra this kid was literally one of my favorite students that I EVER had. Mr. Rose and I would cruise with him all the time because he loved learning Hawaiian culture, had such a vibrant personality that everyone felt welcomed to be around, even as a child. Kahiau would get in trouble sometimes because he just LOVED talking. I know Kahiau as a tall proud Hawaiian boy but when he talks you would think he’s a full podagee. I would even have to catch myself from laughing at his jokes because it was in the middle of class but my soul just listened to him every time he talked. But Kahiau always had the purest heart. I could NEVER detect a bad bone in his body because this boy would literally do anything you needed him to. Carrying things, helping people, keep you company. He would do anything you needed even if he meant he would get in trouble for it(which I had to advise him not to lol).
Kahiau loved learning about Hawaiian culture. He was inquisitive to go deeper into the history of why things would happen and how that affected his people. I would be so proud of him because he would also speak up when he knew things weren’t right.
Kahiau reminded me of myself at that age. Except if I was taller, bigger, stronger, was more social, was friends with everyone, was a good surfer, and just loved to hangout with anyone and everyone. I knew he would become a better activist than me one day because he had so much talent and hunger. He wanted to make his lāhui proud and I could feel it in my na’au. I remember a conversation I had with the ukulele teacher about him. The only time I’ve ever said this about a student. I told Mr. Rose “ I can’t wait until this kid grows up because I would want to cruise with him”. Now I’ll never get that chance. TONS of people will never get to experience what Kahiau brought into this world. I feel sorry for the world because they missed out on a handsome, powerful, full of life boy that had the potential to do amazing things. I love you Kahiau. You made such an impression on me that I knew I would never forget you for my entire life. And one day when we meet again, I’ll let you finish all the jokes that I wouldn’t let you complete because we were in the middle of class and because hello you would cut me off to tell it lol.
