This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.

The South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO) in the North West has reacted with shock after the ‘callous’ gender-based violence(GBV) murder of a 25-year-old woman, Khumontle Mokgosi whose lifeless body was allegedly found strangled at her home in Magong village near Sun City outside Rustenburg.

“We condemn in the strongest terms possible this heinous and dastardly act which points to the fact that Ubuntu and the moral fibre of our society has been eroded and the overall safety of our women and girl-children compromised even in the sanctuary of their homes,” highlighted SANCO Provincial Chairperson, Paul Sebegoe.

Sebegoe conveyed condolences to the Mokgosi family, colleagues, friends and learners that were taught by the Life Science teacher who was employed at Mokaba Secondary School since the beginning of last year after graduating from the North West University in 2018.

In reiterating the call for united action against GBV, Sebegoe said that the national outcry against the scourge seems to be falling on deaf ears as perpetrators are unrepented.

He called on members of the public to assist police in their investigations to ensure that whoever is responsible for the murder is apprehended and removed from society.

“Urgent action is required if the scourge recently declared a pandemic by President Cyril Ramaphosa is to be eradicated,” he stressed.

Sebegoe said that more inclusive structures fashioned along covid-19 command structures must be set up and adequately resourced to fight GBV.

“We must muster the courage to break years of silence that has betrayed our women as well as girl children and with the same effort, energy and enthusiasm directed at covid-19 confront perpetrators before more women are further violated and brutally murdered,” he emphasised.

The body of a 25-year-old teacher, identified as Khumontle Mokgosi, was found in her place of residence in Magong Village near Mogwase in the North West on Monday 29 June.

Provincial Commissioner of North West Lieutenant General Sello Kwena expressed his shock about the alleged killing of Khumontle Mokgosi.

KHUMONTLE MOKGOSI SUSPECTED OF BEING STRANGLED According to information at the police’s disposal, neighbours and members of the School Governing Body (SGB) conducted a search after the young teacher failed to report for duty.

Khumontle Mokgosi’s lifeless body was found with her hands and feet tied up. It is suspected that she was strangled.

“As a result, a case of murder was opened. An investigation into the matter is currently underway and no arrest has been effected at this stage,” said Brigadier Sabata Mokgwabone.

Kwena said it’s disturbing that the life of a young teacher was brought to an abrupt end by merciless criminal/s amid calls by all sectors of society for gender-based violence to cease. Kwena said police are working hard to ensure that perpetrators are brought to book.

Over 200 protesters conducted a demonstration outside Parliament on Tuesday against gender-based violence. According to GroundUp, police requested that the protesters leave due to it being an illegal gathering but no one budged. Instead, protesters sat on the ground and said they would not leave until someone from government collected their memorandum.

Police request anyone who may have information about the incident to contact the Investigating Officer Sergeant Justice Ramosoeu on 083-616-0995. Anonymous tip-offs can be communicated via MySAPS App or by calling the Crime Stop number: 0860-010-111.

MAN ARRESTED FOR MURDER IN SEPARATE INCIDENT In a separate incident, Hartbeespoortdam police in the North West arrested a 47-year-old suspect for murder on Monday 29 June — the same day the body of Khumontle Mokgosi was discovered.

The suspect was arrested shortly after an incident which occurred at a resort in Kosmos Hartbeespoortdam at about 18:00.

“It is alleged, that the victim, Tebatjo Samuel Monyuku, 31, was on duty as a security guard at the resort when an argument ensued between him and the suspect,” said Mokgwabone.

“The latter hit and drove over the victim with his Isuzu bakkie. The victim succumbed to his injuries on the scene,” added Mokgwabone.

The suspect is expected appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court today on Wednesday 1 July.

We are still working on getting more details about the death, as family statement on the death is yet to be released.
