Sal Anthony Corrente Says ” I was very sad to learn that Eddie Mekka better known as Carmine Ragusa’s “The Big Ragoo from Laverne and Shirley has passed away. I hit it off with Eddie right away. I normally tell a story about Howard “Ernest T. Bass” Morris who I first met back in 1997. We had a tough go of it for Mayberry Days but it all came off ok. We met again and as Howard was getting older he didn’t remember me which was great. We were getting along very well I recall Jackie Joseph-Lawrence coming by and was very surprised because she knew that Howard and I had a couple of Whoop De Doos in 97. When the day was done I drove Howard home and mentioned how great Cindy Williams did at the event. He immediately looks at me and points his finger in my face and says “Were you on that show?” I said, “No Howard, I wasn’t on that show”. It seems he had directed an episode years before. Howard had a long directing career but I guess the girls had driven him nuts. He said his friend Garry Marshall wrote him a personal letter of apology. The next day I told Eddie Mekka the story I was still confused about him asking if I was on Laverne and Shirley. So Eddie said, “Sal, you can’t figure this out? I said “No, honestly I can’t”. He said, “He thought that you were me”. I said “Oh Ok, I get it now. Eddie was a legitimate triple threat with a great voice and always a smile. The world feels like a worse place because he isn’t in it any longer. I met Eddie through a mutual friend George Pecoraro promoter to the stars but a friend to all. I called him immediately after hearing the news. It’s a shame that as we get older it’s death that seems to reacquaint us.”
