We are deeply saddened to hear of Mary de Saulles passing. Mary was a true inspiration in Architecture and her message was strong and from the heart: “Females can have it all, that’s what I’ve done and it’s great”.

We were very sorry to hear that Mary De Saulles has died, aged 94. Mary’s very well regarded book ‘The Story of Shrewsbury’ is a most brilliant account of the history of our town.Mary became an architect in 1948 as one of only 42 ladies to join the profession that year. She worked in London County Council’s Architect’s Department, and then as Industrial Designer to British European Airways before becoming an architectiural consultant. In the 1960s she and her family moved to Shropshire where she established a small architectural practice in St Mary’s Water Lane, together with her husband Patrick, that received Civic Society awards and an RIBA Commendation. One of Mary’s projects was to design viewing platforms around the old well heads that used to serve the town, at Conduit Head in Nobold. The site is now leased to Shropshire Beekeepers Association and has been transformed into a wildlife visitor centre.
Mary has been involved in many aspects of Shrewsbury, including as Chairman of the RIBA’s Festival of Architecture, of The Business Club, and of The Shropshire Building Preservation Trust.
Mary de Saulles designed British Airways original red square logo, wrote The Story of Shrewsbury and was one of the oldest patients to have open heart surgery at the age of 90.
Sad to hear about the passing of Mary de Saulles. Lovely lady with a passion for Shrewsbury Heritage, History & Architecture. Very honoured to write the foreword for her Shrewsbury History book.
