RIP Coach. I was managing one of his guys in summer ball. I call him to say I was disciplining his guy. He says, “No need to call. You are his coach right now, I’m not. I trust you.” I was a young junior college coach. He was Mike Gillespie from USC. I learned a lot that day.

RIP Mike Gillespie, the former College of the Canyons, USC and UC Irvine coach who once called for a steal of home by Morgan Ensberg … in a College World Series championship game!

Tough day—we just lost a Baseball LEGEND—Coach Mike Gillespie.

He was more than a Coach, he was a mentor, a father figure, who knew how to push our buttons to become not only great baseball players, but great men with heart and character.

To this day, the finest collection of people I know, were influenced by Coach Gillespie and the University of Southern California’s Baseball program.

There will never be another Coach Gillespie. He will be missed by so many but his legacy will live on at College of the Canyons, USC and UCI.

Thanks for giving me the 3-0 green light in the Fresno Regionals, Coach—that meant you trusted me and I didn’t let you down. RIP
