This departure was confirmed through social media posts made by Twitter users who pour out tributes, and condolences to the family of the deceased.
“The death of a 16-year-old Down Syndrome boy has sparked violent protests in the Johannesburg suburb of Eldorado Park earlier today.
It is alleged that Nathaniel Julius had left to try and find food for his family and while he was outside, he saw a police van with emergency lights on. According to reports, the teen became excited and police shot at him.”
Tensions were high in Eldorado Park on Thursday between the SAPS and residents following protests over the death of Nathaniel Julius, who was allegedly killed by a police officers.
Video footage was shared online showing angry residents “attacking” police vehicles.
The SAPS Gauteng spokesperson described the situation as “extremely volatile” despite the SAPS’ best efforts to contain it and officers even allegedly threatened to shoot journalists who got in their way.
Nathaniel Julius, a 16-year old boy who lived with down syndrome, was shot and killed by police while eating a cookie next to a tuck shop in Eldos.
They then dropped his body at a hospital, and tampered with evidence by lying that he was involved in gang activities.
The police that fails to uphold the law in many instances, and unable to protect citizens from known criminals once again has been found wanting. If this kind of attitude continues, soon they will find themselves on the opposite side the communities, and a repeat of the 80s will unfold where they will be considered enemies of the people.
It doesn’t bode well in a democracy.
The killing of Nathaniel Julius really struck a nerve. Nobody deserves to go down like this, least of all an innocent child. 💔
Our children have so much faith in the justice system. They aspire to be officers of the law. They idolize police officers, thinking that they’re there to protect and serve but then this is the end result. No child should live in fear of being killed for merely being a child.
He literally did NOTHING to deserve this. There’s no possible way you could claim that he posed a threat to his perpetrator or that it was an act of self defense. This just goes to show how unjust our so-called justice system is.
You deserved better, young man. May your story fuel the fight for justice. May the police officer who killed you be held accountable. May your life not be lost in vain and may your soul rest in eternal peace. 🙏❤️
